Size : 25 " : Grey and white stocky heron.  Black back and black cap.  Immature brown with white streaks.  Immature differ from the Yellow Crowned by its yellow green lower bill as opposed to black for the Yellow Crowned.   Neck usually protracted except while attacking prey

The Black-crowned Night-heron and Yellow-crowned Night-heron are both found here in Charlotte County.  They feed mostly in the evenings or at night.  I know of at least one rookery with 15 to 20 nests yearly.  This particular rookery includes Anhingas, Double Crested Cormorants, Great Egrets, Great Blue Herons, Cattle Egrets, Snowy Egrets, and to one end of the island in the cattails are some Little Blue Herons, Tri-Colored Herons, Boat Tailed Grackles and Moorhens.  I also heard a Least Bittern, the last time I was out there, though I have no proof of it nesting.
