16" Male : Large all black with bluish gloss around head.  Long tail folded up on the sides.  Female,  buffy brown below, darker above but no iridescence.  Female 2 or 3 inches shorter than male.

Boat-tailed Grackles are common here.  Where ever there is fresh water.  They build their nest in the cattail reeds along the shorelines or low trees nearby.
