Size : 18"  Large mostly black woodpecker with red crest.  Male has red patch stretching back straight from the center of the base of the bill.  White on underlining of wings in flight.

The Pileated Woodpecker is found throughout the county.  Its large size distinguishes it from all other woodpeckers.  It is usually shy and elusive, but I was able to use a tape recorder and call this female close enough for a picture.
