Size - 9" :Red nape,
belly tan. Tail and back barred with white. Male red patch extends
to forehead.
The Red-bellied Woodpecker is probably our most common woodpecker. I used to wonder
why it was called red-bellied when the chest is tan-gray until I saw one
land on a window mounted feeder. It is true that between the legs
of this woodpecker the belly is pinkish red. It is not visible
under most instances.
