Size : 8"  In summer is has a rusty breast.  In winter, more common here, it has a white breast with a pale head and relatively short black bill, black legs and a black shoulder may be visible.  In flight they have a large white wing stripe.

The Sanderling is probably the counties most common shore bird, at least in winter.  It is often seen chasing the waves in search of food.  It is seldom seen in its summer plumage because it nests in the arctic tundra.
