Size - 8" : Tail bobbing and unique flight.  In summer breast has dark spots and beak is orange or pinkish, in winter spots on breast faint or not present and bill is dark.

The Spotted Sandpiper is a winter resident.  We see it along both fresh and salt water with it's tail bobbing away.  Its flight is unique in that the wings are stiff and it appears like the tips are just flapping.  The wing beats are in short spurts, appearing to be just enough to keep it up.
