Size - 24" :  Stocky grey heron with black head.  Yellowish white crown and cheek patch.  Yellow Legs.Thick heavy bill.   

The Yellow-crowned Night Heron is often seen on the beach at dusk or dawn. It seems to like to hunt Ghost Crabs there.  I once found a small rookery in Charlotte Harbor in the high branches of a group of Slash Pines about a block from the Bay.  The immatures of the Black-crwoned Night Heron and Yellow-crowned Night Heron are similar except that the immature Yellow-crowned Night Heron has a solid black bill and the Black-crowned Night Heron's is yellowish on the bottom of the bill.
